Check it out...this past Sunday, we discussed how Sampson chose to listen to the advice of those around him and that was not a good decision to make.
Sampson came from a great beginning. He had godly parents and God wanted to accomplish great things through him. Sampson had been chosen by God to be a judge of Israel. And actually, the Spirit of God lived in Sampson when he was very young.
Sampson was empowered by God with incredible strength which was enough to tear a Lion in two with his bare hands and slay 1,000 men with a jawbone of a donkey. That’s pretty amazing!!! Sampson’s strength came from God. It was God’s power that Sampson possessed. But Sampson believed his power came from his long hair which was never to be cut because Sampson was a Nazarite who took the vow. Sampson was also never to go near anything dead or drink of any wine or eat anything unclean.
Sampson’s pride and the influence of some ungodly friends caused Sampson to break promises he made to God as a Nazarite. Sampson was proud of what he did to the Lion. Sampson saw that honey bees had formed a hive inside of the dead Lion and that there was honey inside to eat. Sampson chose to eat it. And Sampson also chose to be married to a woman that did not love or serve God. Then most tragically, Sampson fell asleep in his tent and his wife, Delilah, cut off his hair. When Sampson tried to fight off the Philistines, he was completely helpless because God had removed his power from him. Sampson’s biggest mistake came from listening to his friends more than he listened to God.
Even though Sampson had great strength, he had a great weakness – he chose ungodly friends. The Bible is right when it tells us the wrong kind of friends can hurt us. The choice is ours who we will listen to and who our friends will be. Who are you hanging out with?
See ya Sunday!
